Viburnum tinus: A Reliable Evergreen Shrub for Year-Round Interest

Viburnum tinus, also known as Laurustinus, is a versatile and attractive evergreen shrub that offers year-round appeal. Its fragrant winter flowers and glossy foliage make it a popular choice for hedges, borders, or as a standalone specimen.

Plant Care Tips:

  • Light: Viburnum tinus thrives in full sun to partial shade. While it tolerates some shade, it flowers best in sunny locations. In very hot climates, afternoon shade is beneficial.
  • Water: Once established, Viburnum tinus is relatively drought-tolerant. However, during its first year, it needs regular watering to establish a strong root system. Water deeply during dry spells. Established plants generally only need supplemental watering during extended periods of drought.
  • Soil: Prefers well-drained soil. It adapts to a variety of soil types, including clay, loam, and sandy soils, as long as drainage is good. Amending the soil with compost or other organic matter at planting time improves drainage and fertility.
  • Temperature: Tolerates a wide range of temperatures, making it suitable for many climates. It's hardy in USDA zones 7-10.
  • Fertilizer: Generally, Viburnum tinus doesn't require heavy fertilization. A light feeding with a balanced fertilizer in spring before new growth begins is sufficient. Avoid over-fertilizing, which can lead to excessive foliage growth at the expense of flowering.
  • Pruning: Light pruning can be done to maintain shape and size. Prune after flowering to avoid removing next year's buds. Hard pruning can be done to rejuvenate older plants.
  • Pests and Diseases: Generally resistant to pests and diseases, but can occasionally be susceptible to aphids, scale insects, and fungal diseases like powdery mildew. Monitor plants regularly and treat any issues promptly.

Light Level: Full sun to partial shade

Toxicity: Generally considered non-toxic to humans and animals, but it's always best to prevent ingestion of any plant material, especially in large quantities.
